Tour Highlights
We will begin our tour north of Olbia, where the Sacred Well of Sa Testa is located. This precious Nuragic archaeological site has preserved much of its ancient charm and will allow us to immerse ourselves in the Bronze Age and discover the ritual practices of this ancient population, expressed also through monumental megalithic structures.
From the rituals associated with water, a source of life and a supreme judge, we will move into the sphere of funerary rituals and the world of the afterlife, visiting the Giants’ Tomb of Su Monte ’e S’Abe. This archaeological site, also dating back to the Nuragic period, is one of the largest and most impressive in Sardinia.
Adjacent to the Giants’ Tomb, we will visit the medieval fortress of Pedres. Still in a good state of preservation, it offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval life in Sardinia, when the island was contested by the Pisans, Genoese and later the Aragonese, all fighting for control of the island.
The afternoon will be dedicated to discovering the city of Olbia. We will walk through the historic centre and visit the Church of San Paolo, dating from the Late Middle Ages, and the Basilica of San Simplicio, built at the end of the 11th century.
We will walk along Olbia’s main street, Corso Umberto I, which follows the route of the ancient Greek and later Roman road, whose remains can still be seen today. The road once led towards the harbour.
The street parallel to Corso Umberto is characterised by the medieval “carreras”, narrow streets lined with houses that still preserve ancient granite lintels bearing inscriptions indicating the year in which the buildings were founded.
Our final stop will be the Archaeological Museum of Olbia, which houses artefacts dating back as far as prehistoric times. At the museum, we will also see the remains of two large Roman merchant ships, probably burned by the Vandals during their raids along the Sardinian coast.
