This tour is ideal for those who wish to discover the history of Olbia, or rather that of ancient Olbìos (from the Greek meaning “happy” or “fortunate”), the Greek-founded city whose prosperity was largely due to its strategic location on a natural, sheltered harbour.

Tour Highlights

We will begin our walk at Molo Brin and continue along Corso Umberto I, where we will encounter the remains of the ancient Roman pavimentum. This will be the starting point of our journey through the history of the city: from the earliest human settlements to the Greek foundation, the Carthaginian period and the Roman conquest.

The turbulent years that followed the fall of the Western Roman Empire are well documented by the remains of several Roman merchant ships, probably burned by the Vandals, who began raiding the island from the 5th century onwards. The remains of these vessels are now preserved at the Archaeological Museum of Olbia.

We will then spend the remaining time exploring the historic centre of Olbia, following the ancient medieval streets and admiring the stone lintels bearing inscriptions with the dates of construction of the buildings.

We will conclude our tour with a visit to the Church of San Paolo and the Basilica of San Simplicio, dating back to the 11th century and built in the Pisan Romanesque style.
